Kaleb, I just watched the entire sermon by Paul Washer...your right he is one "intense and passionate man of God." Sadly, I think he makes some very good points about the North American Church.
I wasn't so bold as Paul Washer but preached a message along this line...about living in the "Presence of the King" and how that would change many of our day to day lives more then somewhat but dramatically!!!
Thanks for this link…
One of the tactics used in an abusive relationship is for the abuser to continually repeat to the victim that they love them, even as the abuse continues. Looking at the situation from the outside it is fairly easy to see that these words are insincere of self-deceptive in the mouth of the abuser. They may continue to tell the one suffering the abuse that they love them but we all know its not true.
It always makes me curious then, coming back to Paul Washer, why christians get to wander around handing out abuse all the while calling it love. People aren't stupid. People can tell if your being loving or not. Mother Teresa was loving, fearful and threatening sermons don't really seem like it. So Mr Washer may have some good ideas but even if he speaks in the voice of angels yet still doesn't have love all we are really hearing is noise.
On a related note, maybe Mr Washer is taking his cue from the fear based political sermons being delivered now adays. If you haven't the time or energy or desire to empathize with people and really show them love through service and kind compassion, then scaring the shit out of them might garner you a little respect I suppose.
